Event Coverage: Coffee and Cars, April Edition

Coffee and Cars, our monthly exotic fix of high end cars and enticement, occurred this past Saturday and was special in a couple of ways. First, it was the new venue that the event was being held at, Vintage Park, right outside of the north side of Houston. A large welcoming venue, with café’s and restaurants to entertain the crowd, seemed to be THE new home for the event. After a little bit of trouble finding a permanent spot, Jorge and Bill, the organizers of Houston’s Coffee and Cars chapter, hit a homerun on this one.

Dreary skies, light rain and 200% humidity were the welcoming factors for Saturday, definitely not turbo weather, I haven’t broken a sweat like that since before the winter started.

But Mother Nature’s forces didn’t keep the fans from coming out. There were EASILY 600 plus cars that came out which is a testament to the hunger that Houstonians have for great rides.

The New Home.

Nostalgic Wednesdays: Nissan Skyline “Ken & Mary”

the overall aura of this car is classic.

Another Wednesday, another time to look back and remember the cars that have shaped automotive history. Today’s topic would be the 72-77 Nissan Skyline C110 or popularly know and the “Kenmeri”.  The Skyline C110 got its popular nickname from its J-pop soap opera looking series of ad campaigns about a couple’s joyrides along the countryside; of course, their names… Ken and Mary.

Event Coverage: MaydayGarage x SpeedHunters All Japanese Nostalgic Car Meet.

What started as silly banter on our Facebook page between me and SpeedHunter, Linhbergh Nguyen, evolved into a proposed meet of Houston’s best old school Japanese classic cars, I excitedly agreed to make it happen. When JohnP eventually found out that I had accepted the proposal from Linhbergh, JohnP had gone into full fledged freak out mode. If you know a little about John’s background, then you know when he throws a meet, you also know he likes to do things big. Hey guys, hope you had fun and got to try out some exotic game hot dogs before they ran out.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!

In this picture: SpeedHunter Linhbergh flies through the air while MaydayGarage’s John Peterson awaits. The Cressida behind them is sporting a 400HP 7MGTE. Not sure who owns it though, but thanks for being a good sport!

Event Coverage: The Texas Mile (March 2011)

Most people know or have a rough estimate of how fast they are in a quarter mile, but have you ever wondered how fast your car or bike can go in a standing mile? The Texas Mile, now held 3 times a year, is a national event held at an old airport in Goliad, TX, where speed demons zoom down a runway to see what their top speed is at the 1 mile mark.  220 participants registered for unlimited runs down the mile for either 2 or 3 days while 30 others were on the waiting list to take up the spots of any cancellations or no shows.  I wanted to test my bimmer out there, but I had to hold back the awesome power of my 150HP BMW 323i as I still had to get back to Houston.

A sea of speed demons waiting to go balls out.
