Mayday Garage Year in Review: Part 5b (FINAL)

Continuing on from part 5a… (CLICK HERE FOR PART 5a)

The second specialty meet we had was the WekFest TX official PreMeet at the same place. We had originally tried to have the meet in downtown itself, but with city regulations, permits and all sorts of legal hurdles, we had to rule this one out. We even tried to host it down the street of Washington Avenue, but in order to do that, we again would need many permits, waivers, insurance and more importantly, we needed to have booked this event many many many months in advance. We decided to have it again at Moon Tower Inn because of the great success we had with the JNCM, but our only real concern was if the venue was big enough.
Three Hondas, three gigantic wings

Big enough? Let us explain, the year before this one in 2014, we had held the first official WekFest PreMeet at 8th Wonder Brewery located just a few miles away from Moon Tower Inn, and we thought at the time we would have enough space. Well, it turns out that there were so many cars encompassing all of the side streets and parking lots, we physically didn’t have enough space to park all 1000+ cars. So with Moon Tower, there is a much longer street, but the side streets were much smaller. We had permission to use some of the industrial buildings surrounding the area, and we even rented some portable heavy duty lights to keep everything well lit, but this time, there were even MORE cars than years past.

We shut down the east side of Downtown Houston that night. It was the greatest ricer night of the year, and by far our most successful meet we had thrown this far. Parked in front we had Rami’s super sick Honda S2000 fresh with a new turbo motor setup rolling in from Louisiana, Bradley Lafayette’s RHD carbon fiber J’s Racing wide body VGS S2K from Tennessee, and J.Cald’s completely insane shaved, tucked, all of the above Acura Integra from RC’s Garage in Arizona that would eventually win best of show the next day at Wekfest. On google maps, the entire grid was lit up red from all the traffic. Canal street ended up being a “catwalk” for people to strut their stuff. Our friends from StickyDilJoe and WekFest were amazed at what we had created, and even more amazed at the cooperation from the Houston Police Department. We had zero instances, and everything was orderly for the most part. Food from both Moon Tower Inn and our own Ricebox was on point, and the beer served at Moon Tower Inn kept everyone happy.

As 2014 is now on our greatest hits list, 2015 will be moving even faster and we expect to show off some truly unique stuff both in products and events as well as with our own personal cars that reflect our tastes. We invite all who truly love cars to make it out to one of our meets/events and to be together as a community and enjoy other peoples’ builds.

Goodbye, 2014. Hello 2015! The year of the RICE!

Low Friendly Maps for the PreMeet!

Because many of you have asked, we took the time to make these maps to the event! We call them the dump maps, aka, for dumped cars. These are the three different scenarios/routes that you would possibly take if you’re coming in from any direction.
**Disclaimer** Although we try our best to route the best way to get there, there are still bumps in the roads. You MUST use common sense and drive slowly through just like you would on any road you’ve never been on with your slammed car!

From I-10 West or I-45 North:

Dump Map I10W

From I-10 East:
This map is for anyone coming in from the East side, aka I-10 East. Take special precaution of the road RIGHT after the railroad tracks near Clinton street. Also- STAY ON THE RIGHT LANE when you take the bridge over the water on Lockwood Drive.

Dump Map I10E

From US 59 South or I-45 South:
This is a map for anyone coming in from the south side, aka, US 59 South, I-45 South. You’ll basically loop around downtown.
If you drive a normal car, ignore this map and just take 59 North and exit Polk St.

We’ll see you guys at 6pm today!

Keep Tuning,

The WekFest USA Official WekFest PreMeet Hosted by Mayday Garage

Last year we hosted WekFest USA’s official pre meet, and it was the largest we had ever managed. Over 1000 cars jam packed in downtown Houston and it was glorious. Dubbed “the best meet I’ve ever been to” by staff at WekFest, we expect this year to be bigger and even better! Join us the night before WFTX on Saturday, 10/18/14 at 6pm at Moon Tower Inn located on 3004 Canal St right outside of Downtown! We will have MANY cars out for this one including a ton of out of state guests. We will have our very own Ricebox food truck there serving the best damn Chinese food in Houston in addition to having Moon Tower’s famous hot dogs and local Texas craft beers! If you missed last years meet, you have a chance to redeem yourself this year and celebrate the WekFest TX weekend with us!! See you there! Spread and share!!

An Opulence of Style: Dennis To’s Silky Smooth Mazda RX-8.

If I was given a dollar for every car that has been thrown at me to consider featuring on MaydayGarage, I’d have enough money to buy myself a set of decent wheels for the daily. When I get the opportunity to check out local meets, i’m always in scouting mode, scanning the endless sea of imports to find “that” car. Sometimes I’ll strike out, but then sometimes I’ll come across a car that will instantly catch my eye.

Lifestyle: The Mayday Life.

This post is a long time coming.

So a lot of people I meet at car events/meets/shows always say three things-
1. “Hey man, I love the photos/coverage/cars you guys put up!”
2. “Yeah, I always keep up with your blog and Facebook page!”
3. “What else do you guys do besides take photos and write posts?”

Three's company?

Work'ing hard or hardly Work'ing? Definitely the first.

Some people love shopping in malls, we prefer junkyards.

Need a lift?

If you know us personally, then you know what we’re into, and the kind of things we do, but a lot of you have been asking what exactly we do. Sure, we post random car pictures on Facebook, take photos of cars and meets/events, but like our tagline suggests- we are ricers first, bloggers second. So in an effort to show our followers what we’re into, we will be introducing another segment, The Mayday Life. The Mayday Life will be a random post about ONE day in our lives, and it could be about pretty much anything. But it’s always car related.

Event Coverage: MaydayGarage x SpeedHunters All Japanese Nostalgic Car Meet.

What started as silly banter on our Facebook page between me and SpeedHunter, Linhbergh Nguyen, evolved into a proposed meet of Houston’s best old school Japanese classic cars, I excitedly agreed to make it happen. When JohnP eventually found out that I had accepted the proposal from Linhbergh, JohnP had gone into full fledged freak out mode. If you know a little about John’s background, then you know when he throws a meet, you also know he likes to do things big. Enter the MaydayGarage x SpeedHunters All Japanese Nostalgic Car Meet.
