Texas Cars UNITE!!!

For the longest time, we’ve always wanted a reason to bring multiple cities in Texas together for one event. WekFest USA will be having their show for the first time in Houston, our hometown, next month on Sunday, December 15th at the George R. Brown Convention center. As you know, they’ve asked us to host a Pre Meet in Houston, the night before, and we enthusiastically obliged by teaming up with Stickydiljoe to have our premeet at the 8th Wonder Brewery just a couple of blocks away. We know there’ll be a lot of you guys coming to both events, and we’ve teamed up with some local leaders in the Austin and Dallas areas to have a mass caravan from each respective city to leave that Saturday morning and have them all come together for lunch at The Moon Tower Inn, a badass food spot that specializes in wild game hot dogs and Texas brewed craft beers.

The idea is to have everyone come to this spot to not only eat and drink, but also to give people that don’t know anyone in Houston a place to socialize and kill some time before heading just a mile or two down the road to our meet at 8th Wonder. We will be there at all three venues, so please prepare your livers, it will be one of the best car weekends of your life.

Elevens’ Paint & Fiber Street Style.

There are a handful of car groups that we love to follow that have that “hnnnnnnnnnng” factor. Elevens’ Paint & Fiber is definitely one of those groups. Mayday Mikey had the pleasure of meeting some of these drifters at a recent drift event, and from his impressions, they are a pretty legit set of car guys. Part of what we like with the Elevens’ group is that Street Style, something that we’ve been preaching for a long while. While we don’t like to group cars together, sometimes you get the feeling there are certain categories that car people fall under. There are show cars, the guys that like to dress up everything in their rides while maintaining that show room quality, and there are racecars which are the guys that sacrifice everything in the name of getting that better lap time, quarter mile ET, or those drift points. So where does that leave the other 98% of us car enthusiasts? Like the most of you, we fall under the street car category, the category in which standing out is a feat in itself because the pool is so large.

Traveling to different countries, we have found that Japan has the street style game on lock, not because they have RHD Toyota Chasers, 800whp street R33 GTR’s or even SR20DET powered Suzuki Cappuccinos, it’s because of their relentless passion for making their cars their own. We have noticed on dozens of occasions that they simply “don’t give a flying fuck” for what other people think. While many here stateside would never consider running two different types of wheels, or LED lights all under their own rides for fear of others ostracizing their choices, the Japanese feel to stand out, one must express themselves. And we are all for it.

So lately we’ve been seeing the Elevens’ Paint guys cars pop up now and then on our Facebook and Instagram feed, and we obsessively press the LIKE button every time. They exude that Japanese Street Style that we admire so much, and it is nice to see this group of cars come out of a place like Arizona and represent so well.

A lot of people think “okay, they have a bunch of 240’s with panels that don’t even line up correctly”, and if this is the thought that crosses your mind, then this is definitely not the post for you. If you get it, then you get it, if you are confused as to why we love these types of cars, then the only thing we can suggest is to see these cars in person, in the flesh, and not on the interwebz as the feel of seeing these cars roll down the street is vastly different than seeing a few cool images on a website.

Volume is sometimes overrated.

We love the sound of squealing tires as they fight with the pavement below them in a tug-of-war match of grip and slip, and we absolutely go bonkers when we hear high revving, turbocharged four bangers bounce the rpm needle off of the tach, but sometimes it’s nice to look at a photo and think, “wow, that’s really soothing”. Of course, with drifting, this is usually accomplished by watching one of the many hundreds of online videos of these cars in super slow motion, but kind of hard to accomplish with one photo and no volume. Kory Leung managed to capture that moment for me with this very simple, but soothing photo of a drift 180sx at sunset. Looking at this photo makes me want to lean back in my chair, and think about how life is so simple and we tend to overthink it. Now, I’m not trying to get all “find ones innerself” on you guys, but just take a moment and think about what you will be doing today, or this weekend.

Now imagine how all of that would be if you were in a constant and steady drift in this car with the sun kissing the side of your face without a sound. Soothing, isn’t it?

Dat WekFest Prep.

So by now you guys have seen Khiem’s 2JZGTE powered Vintage Red FD RX-7 all over the interwebz. Believe me when I say his motor choice gets tons of hate from the rotary purists, but it’s what makes the world go round. People’s preferences in modifying cars is exactly that- a preference. The way we look at it, every car is a blank canvas, and with each modification done, it is an extension of oneself. In Khiem’s case, he’s owned a 500+whp Lexus SC300 and before that, he’s owned a 500+whp Honda Accord, so his obvious addiction is horsepower. But there is another FD. A “twinsie”, so to speak. Just like Justin Rogers’ white kouki S14 on silver TE37’s resembles Aubre Houck’s white kouki S14 on silver TE37’s, we have another Vintage Red FD RX-7 owned by another Team Mayday Garage member, but his preference is the finicky but cool rotary powered 13B-REW. The FD is about to hit the paint booth soon in preparation for WekFest TX with the new wide fenders and body work. Soon, this FD will join with Khiem’s 7 to wreak havoc in our hometown of Houston, TX, also home to December 15th’s WekFest TX held at George R. Brown Convention center. Be sure to check the car in it’s natural habitat at our Official WekFest Pre-Meet held at 8th Wonder Brewery the night before for an unforgettable time with Team Mayday Garage.
