This past sunday, the good folks over at NonStopTuning, a.k.a. NST, celebrated their illustrious 5 year anniversary in La Marque, TX with over one thousand close friends and family! While some businesses celebrate with cheaply made cake and cheesy party hats, NST took it a few steps further by holding a drift competition and car show held at Gulf Greyhound Park just south of Houston. Despite the bitter forty degree weather, that didn’t seem to stop the hundreds of spectators from (as JohnP so eloquently put it) getting their drift fix. Luckily, there wasn’t any disappointment from the drifters as they put on their multiple layers of clothing and kept their heads warm in their helmets.
NonStopTuning is known for their pulley systems for most popular sport compact cars, but they are also known for their involvement in the local Houston drift scene as they have always made an appearance at every event in some way, shape or form. Most notably, Will Parsons’ green Toyota Corolla AE86 has seen a lot of action in both the local scene and even in D1 competition.
NST can be found at pretty much all drift events under their tent with a bevy of pulleys and clothes to showcase as demonstrated by Mike here:
NST also provided refreshments via the lovely girls of Red Bull who were at the event to pass out free energy drinks throughout the entire competition!
Good thing there were plenty of energy drinks, cause drifting ain’t easy if you’ve got a hangover (long story) like most of the drifters out that day! Among the local celebrities such as Ameen Rizvi, Chelsea DeNofa, Stewart Leask, Fielding Shredder and Russell Walker, there were also a lot of rising stars like Victor Sun that would give these fellas a run for their money in their homegrown rides ranging from 240sx’s to Toyota Supras and even Ford Mustangs.
As you can probably already tell, there was quite a few drivers out on track at all times, and everyone had a good amount of seat time from what I could tell. All the while, there was also a car show happening at the same time! Luckily, the guys here at Mayday Garage have all aspects covered, and as JohnP stayed mostly trackside to get all of the action on his Canon DSLR, I was mainly on the pitside of things to check out the spectator point-of-view. On the video side (yes, I said video), we have Mr. Fabio Pontes handling film duties with the help of the one and only JohnL of Planet-Zero fame.
Speaking of Pitside, there was plenty of things going on, anything from changing tires to turbos was all done with simple hand tools, and plenty of friends to help out. The great thing about drifting is the involvement of people and friends that have the same interests as you, and that in turn, makes it that much more fun for everyone.
As I walked over to the car show portion of the event, there were a number Scions present as were some Subarus, but there was also a strong showing of Toyota Corolla AE86’s. There were some super clean examples, with even some traveling all the way from McAllen, TX to make an appearance. I was floored with the overall quality of these corollas, and after talking to Arturo, the owner of the brownish AE86, he’s graciously allowed us to feature his car soon! So look for a full blown photoshoot on this wicked AE86 later! For now, these pics (I’m not as good as Khiem) will have to do!
But besides the showing of corollas, there were a lot of other nice rides out there, even a very nice 90’s style Acura Integra DA with Cali plates. There were also a couple of non-drifting 240sx’s and even an R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R.
While I was walking through the Car show, I was also enjoying the mixes spun by DJ Tito, a DJ you will see at most major car events and meets. Tito spins different types of music, but not country, or Christian Gangsta Rap, so remember that.
After checking out the car show, it was time to head back to the track as the competition was about to start, and I didn’t want to miss out, as the drivers were gonna fight for the cash prizes to be won! But we’ll save that for part two! (Don’t worry, i’ve got over 500 pictures to share!)
Stay tuned!
