A Passion for Tarmac Rallying: Paulie’s WRC Tarmac Project

I told myself I wouldn’t wake up at 5 a.m. for a shoot anymore, but to turn down a chance to shoot one of the cleanest Subaru WRXs in the States, I made myself get up even though I had a sick stomach virus that caused some mad toilet action the night before.  JohnP and I met up with Paulie at 6 a.m. in downtown Fort Worth while the other Mayday guys were still asleep back at the hotel.  This is the day after WekFest Forth Worth by the way. Mayday Mikey, David, Venn, and Danny partied all nite so they weren’t able to make it and our other ace photographer Khiem…. well he doesn’t like to get up at 6 a.m.

It was early... really early.

We arrived at the location early, but it was still too dark to shoot, so Paulie and his wife started cleaning up the WRX a bit more before we started shooting.  Their car was already clean since the car showed at WekFest Ft.Worth, but they wanted the car to be extra, extra clean since it was their first feature. That’s being meticulous.

It's already clean man... you're in the shot now....

Random Sighting: Slammed Riviera.

Oftentimes I’ll come across a cool car, snap some photos of it and move on. It’s when I upload them onto my computer is when I have doubts that I should even edit the photo and put it up on the blog. I think twice before posting domestic cars on our blog for the simple fact or fear that I will alienate some of our readers. But when I really think about it, who cares? It’s a cool car, and I can pretty much do whatever I want so why not.

I came across this first generation Buick Riviera on my way out of Houston last week and had to jump out of my ricey car and shoot it. I know the brand name Buick is now associated with old geezers that wear Depends and are the types of cars you try to avoid because of the captains piloting their boats, but back in 1962 when Buick first released these coupes to compete with the Ford Thunderbirds, they were actually really nice to look at. Powered by either a 325hp or 340hp V8 engine, these two ton battletanks did battle on the streets ripping up quarter miles in under 16 seconds. I found this pristine example all dressed up in black in front of a clothing store, no less. It seems as if it was bagged, but damn, it looks great!

Gangsta!

Oh so low

Look, no old people driving!

They just don't make dashes like this anymore.

Keep your eyes peeled, if I get a good response from this post, I’ll post up some other vintage domestic cars that I’ve shot!

Nostalgic Wednesday: John Player Special Black Gold

Other than the Gulf Racing Livery, JPS would also be one of my favorite classic racing liveries.John Player’s sponsorship of Team Lotus began with the Lotus 49 in Gold Leaf colours at the 68 Monaco GP, they raced with the Lotus 72, and changed to the famous black and gold John Player Special colors in 1972. Meanwhile in Australia, BMW owned the JPS livery in touring car racing.

The BMW M3 that carried the colors brought in podium positions that In 1984, BMW released a limited-edition road version of its 323i touring car in JPS black and gold colors to the Australian market only.

100 Drifters of December Preview.

Just some quick snaps of a badass Mazda Miata and Toyota Cressida I came across while scouting the grounds at Summit Point for this year’s 100 Drifters of December. Oh, and there was some drifting too! More to come!

This miata wasn't a show queen either.

Dat small ass.

One of the MANY 240's tearing up the course.

Can't have a drift event without the Corollas!

Not gonna lie, I enjoy grassroots drifting more than professional ones. Maybe because I can relate.

Mind the cheese grater hood, this MX83 was actually really clean.

There are two reasons why this picture is awesome.

Random Snap: Deep Breath…

So Nakai San has left Texas this morning, and the frantic last minute scramble to prep MaydayDanny’s 993 has finally ended. Well… for now at least. The painting, the dealing with customs, the crazy motor situation, the tires, even the color choice were all factors in the weeks leading up to Nakai San’s arrival. Are we done? Not yet. Nakai San will be back after we visit him and the rest of the Rauh Welt crew in Japan next month during Tokyo Auto Salon time. It’s gonna be a crazy time, and we have other projects that are scheduled to debut in 2012, so watch out. MaydayGarage in full effect. For Ricers, by Ricers (in a good way).

Even though he tried many Texas made brews, Stella is still his favorite. (one of mine too)
