Random Snap: Deep Breath…

So Nakai San has left Texas this morning, and the frantic last minute scramble to prep MaydayDanny’s 993 has finally ended. Well… for now at least. The painting, the dealing with customs, the crazy motor situation, the tires, even the color choice were all factors in the weeks leading up to Nakai San’s arrival. Are we done? Not yet. Nakai San will be back after we visit him and the rest of the Rauh Welt crew in Japan next month during Tokyo Auto Salon time. It’s gonna be a crazy time, and we have other projects that are scheduled to debut in 2012, so watch out. MaydayGarage in full effect. For Ricers, by Ricers (in a good way).

Even though he tried many Texas made brews, Stella is still his favorite. (one of mine too)

A Mayday Garage Side Project: The Rice Box

If anyone has been paying attention to the blog or our Facebook lately, they will see that Mayday Garage has gotten their hands into some very interesting things. David is moving out East, Danny is building a Rauh Welt 993, Mikey is wrenching his S14, has school and work. Khiem still rolls his beast SC, and plays SF4 professionally. Pro-phan Danh has become a wedding master and BMW track master, Newton is into films, Slappy got married but is still a ricer, Venn works 160 hours a week, and myself, well, I started a food truck called The Rice Box.

The Rice Box is Houston’s first Chinese Fast Food, Food Truck and is also the reason that I have been mucho MIA on the blog, local car events, Formula D and SEMA. Hopefully I can get out to TAS, but we will see. This is a car blog, not a food inspired blog, so I am going to spare the details of all things kitchen/ food related on the truck. I will however share that the truck is powered by a 5.7 liter carbureted V8 and is known to lay down a heavy 27 second quarter mile, and does 0-60mph in about 15 seconds. One of the quicker food trucks in Houston for sure. I hope to get this thing into the 15s fully stocked in a year or so, we will see.

All paint and body work, was done by myself, Danny Barber, Mike Nguyen from TeamShiftPoint and my business parter Arthur Wentworth. The vinyl work on the truck was designed and installed by none other than local Houston Hardparker, Greg Lilly from Underground Graphics. And just in case you don’t remember Greg, you can see his car here.

Im going to keep this short. I wanted show you guys what I have been working on as of late since I haven’t been around. And no, Mayday Garage in Houston will not be dying out nor slowing. We have two more guys coming on to the Houston team since David left to go blow up the East Coast, literally.

So, if you want bad ass Chinese food, or just want to come hang out with any of the Mayday Garage team when you are in Houston, come out to the truck! To the plugs.

Mayday Garage Forever

Teaser Snap: This is Why.

People ask me all the time who we are and what we do. Yeah we take photos, but at our core, we are Ricers. We love cars. It’s moments like these that make it difficult to remember to pick up our cameras and snap what we see in both our heads and in our hearts. This picture captures how we all feel about automotive masterpieces.

It's polite to stare.

Nostalgic Wednesdays: “Slammed”

Driving something  that is lower than factory height, it’s helpless having questions pop in your head as you drive over a speed bump, enter a garage or a ramp. Questions like “is it easier attacking the ramp from the oposite lane?” , “If I scrape, will it hit my oil pan or just my subframe?”, “if the ramp angle is 37 degrees, what would my angle entering the ramp be?” and many more. Browsing the web, i found this interesting video of Bosozoku drivers doing math. It made me smile how these drivers show us how they strategically enter the ramp, well it’s actually a “baby ramp” compared to most ramps (LOL).

To some, this video may be boring. For ricers, this video may spark some nostalgia on when the days you had your car all the way down. For me, It brought me back to the good o’days when me and some friends cruise around the streets of Houston for some snacks on a hot day or coffee on a chilly night; good times.

Nostalgic Wednesdays: 1 Year Later…

November 20th 2010, I got a text message from David asking me to meet up at a Starbucks by the Greenway Plaza. I asked him why, he said “just show up and I’ll tell you”. It was a cold and rainy Saturday, what a perfect weather to stay in and be lazy, but I hopped in my car and drove to see this dude. Got there and as soon as I parked, I saw JohnP pull up in his Lex, then Khiem, then Mikey, then David and Alana. It was a meeting, Laptops out, Option mags out, and discussion started about Mayday plans for 2011. I was like, “wait..why am I here?” Then David and John looked at me and said, “Mark, we’ve read your blogs and we want you to write Nostalgic Wednesdays” *gasp* I smiled and said, “lol, you read my stuff?! I thought I was my own follower.”

So one year later, here I am remembering that day I met these awesome and driven league of extraordinary gentlemen. You guys are awesome like briefs, Thanks for the support!! And as a tribute to a year of me writing about remembering, here’s a collage of classic car brochures/ads that I have covered so far, some pictures collected and saved.
