This Nostalgic Wednesday, we take you back to latter days of big body kits and big wangs.

A few months ago I was sitting at the north Mayday Garage house having a chat with ol’ Mayday David about classic aero from our earlier ricer days. The conversation consisted of our favorite full blown aero kits from that era and how they had their designs leaked and chopped throughout the knock-off chain. One company that came to mind was Ground Designs 2000, the ORIGINAL makers of the Black Widow Kit; a hand laid fiber glass, well fitting body kit that came out in 2001. Now, keep in mind that if you are looking to purchase a Black Widow kit nowadays you will be bombarded with a slew of knock-offs of knock-offs of the original Ground Design’s Black Widow since Ground Designs no longer manufactures this aero.

Why am I choosing this aero kit as a topic of todays Nostalgic Wednesday? Because originality is a hell of a thing, and if you are original, especially in a ricer industry like ours you are most likely going to be copied at some point in time. Most people would have assumed that the Black Widow Kit was an original in its own right, but they unfortunately were wrong. Despite its popularity, the Black Widow Kit borrowed most of its design from none other than Win Corporations Type 1 design aero for the Lexus GS300/400 or Toyota Aristo.

The biggest giveaway is the front bumper, check out the identical bumper air intakes. With exact positioning on the front bumper, it is a dead giveaway that the design was a rip..although one might argue at the added “side vent” from the Black Widow adds to its originality, but hold your horses! In fact, if you really want to get technical, it is almost as if they took the front design of the Win Corp bumper and added the side vents of the Blitz Aristo Bumper.

Ok, so there is a bit of originality to the Black Widow Kit. The side skirts, the rear and that HOOD. No one will ever forget that hood and its all functioning glory.

Now, I am not hating on the Black Widow design but Nostalgic Wednesdays is about looking back and seeing what the hell was really going on back then! And I am here to tell ya, that Black Widow took its design from Win Corporation and Blitz, respect!
