Oh look a Lotus Esprit, no it’s a Delorean, wait, a s13? NSX? Oh a Subaru SVX. First thing that came to thought was, why the SVX? Not a favorite and maybe an eyesore to some, I actually wanted to talk a little bit about the SVX because it’s a rare occasion if you spot one and it gives you that “HA!!LOL THAT WINDOW!!” reaction.
Introduced in 92 to the US market, the SVX was Subaru’s attempt to entice the luxury sport-car enthusiast market. It’s wedge shape and famous “window in a window” concept were designed to reduce air drag according to automotive designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign. The “window in a window”(insert Xzibit meme) was not originally to the SVX, other cars like the DeLorean DMC-12, McLaren F1 and Lamborghini Countach made this concept famous during those times.
Fresh off the bay, the SVX was marked at a high price at the wrong economic time. The recession forced Subaru to release an FF version of the SVX which made it 1,500 cheaper than the AWD version. And in 1997, Subaru decided to pull the plug on the SVX due to sluggish sales. The SVX was a promising car, the stylings of an economic sports car and was one of the cars that came from concept to production with minimal changes; people wasn’t ready for it or it was just too eclectic; i guess It was all about timing.
