One of the best looking coupes of its generation I must say is the 1st and 2nd gen Toyota Soarer. the z10 and z11 are based off the same platform as the early supras, just like the beloved z30 and the MK IV Supra. There are many ways to dress a Soarer, usually z10s and z20s are setup to be shakotan styled or either used as drift platforms. It’s rare to see an unmodified z20 (LOL).
Speaking of Shakotan style, our friends at Speedhunters wrote an interesting article about “Shakotan Boogie” which featured a z10 soarer in one of its chapters.
Have you ever wondered why the z40 or the lexus sc430 has a hardtop convertible? Back in 89, a limited 500 versions of the z20 was produced were equipped with the “aero-cabin” roof. It had 2 seats and an electric folding roof which is similar to today’s sc430.
While surfing the web for some z20 goodies, I stumbled on finding the TOMs Soarer C5. If locating a mint z10 or z20 is hard to find, this special edition TOM’s Special is a needle in a cornfield. All i know is that it had the same upgrades as the 88 Turbo-A Supra.
Considering Toyota has only produced 4 generations of the soarers with a badass griffin/manticore emblem, the z30 would still be my favorite, then the z20 and z10 and lastly, my not so favorite z40. If they released the early Soarers in the US I would definitely be in the hunt for one. Hopefully the new concept would make it passed how the current soarer is. Not only in through design but performance as well.
