Nostalgic Wednesdays: Mazda 929/Sentia

When you hear VIP/Bippu/EXE style, you automatically think of Toyotas and Nissans. Usually, deciding upon what platform to begin with, it’s a norm to choose a higher end trim that came with full accessories, upgraded engine, and all that leather and wooden interior. Perfect examples are the Toyota Century,Majesta, Celsior, Aristo, and the Crown. From Nissan you have the Cima,Q45,Gloria, Cedric, and the President. The name Mazda is synonymous to Mazda Speed, ZoomZoomZoom, Monster RX7 and the gokart miata; how about a Bippu Mazda? Yup, they exist, the Sentia in Japan and 929 to the rest of the world.

Started production in the early 90s, the Sentia was Mazda’s entry into the FR semi-luxury sedan game. It was imported to the Northern American market and was badged the 929. However, the 929’s US career was short lived due to a lack of interest in non-luxury(Lexus/Infiniti) brand J-spec midsize sedan, just the same reason why Toyota pulled the Cressida out of the line in 92.

Obviously, the Sentia may be considered the “Dark Horse” in the Bippu-world, with the right kit, shoes, refined interior and a black tie to match, it can definitely break necks from Toyota and Nissan owners.

Nostalgic Wednesdays: Ferrari Testarossa Koenig Competition Evoluzione

80’s JDM

As a kid, most of us had that one car poster in our bedroom. some had the White Lamborghini Countach, the F1 cars, the Red Dodge Viper, the white Ford GT90 and of course, the red Ferrari Testarossa. I grew up in the generation where if you said Ferrari, I pictured a Testarossa. I wasn’t really a fan of it, till Willy Koenig built the Competition Evo Special.

Nostalgic Wednesday: Carrozzeria Pininfarina

Last week, news spread over the automotive world about the death of an icon, Sergio Pininfarina. Business built by family, Sergio joined his father Battista Farina at Carrozzeria Pininfarina and quickly became a key foundation to the company. During his career, Sergio oversaw most of the designs specially Ferrari. The brand Pininfarina and Ferrari are so synonymous like peanut butter and jelly sammich, you cant mention one without thinking of the other. In 1961, by decree of the Italian president, his lastname was changed from Farina to Pininfarina to match company’s pride and integrity. Other than Ferrari, the company designed a couple of cars for AlfaRomeo, Lancia, Chevy, Mercedes Benz, and many more.In memory of Sergio Pininfarina,What are your favorite Pininfarina designs?

“Ferrari built the machines, and basically Pininfarina clothed them” -Philadelphia Inquirer.

Nostalgic Wednesdays: Depth of Speed-My Church

In today’s generation, where everything is accessible through the internet, automotive tuning has greatly changed. Back then; you had to drive around to look for that perfect project car(now we have craigslist), you had to scour junkshops or fabricate your parts (now we have online stores), you had to go to meets to find out who was the “go-to” guy for parts and services (now we have blogs and forums), you had to call-in your orders and have them shipped overnight from Japan (ebay?). This video brought be back to roots; I’m amazed with this Datsun owner’s passion and dedication. It takes time, patience, a lot of trials and a lot of errors,  but in the end, it’s worth the drive. Enjoy!

Nostalgic Wednesdays: Slammed Shakotan Sigma

Sometimes, while browsing the internet, we come across pictures that we really like and save them. I  usually save pictures of slammed imports and domestics, stunning motorsport pictures, and insane exotics. Last year while browsing through 7Tune, I came across this Shakotan styled Mitsubishi Galant Sigma. Like oysters, the plain factory Sigma was an acquired taste. This slammed “Shakotan” Sigma sitting on classic Longchamps was like baked oysters with melted butter, garlic and cheese; it left an aftertaste that made me want more. So here’s some pictures I saved and if you guys have some in your stash, send them my way. Pictures are courtesy of random enthusiasts with the same love for this classic.

Nostalgic Wednesdays: Toyota Corolla FX16 GT-S

With the release of the new Toyota 86 also known as the Scion FR-S / Subaru BR-Z here in the states, Toyota tries to bring back the fun in driving. On my way home from my parents the other day, I spotted a black FR-S and I was ecstatic. The JDM sport hatch is back!

Remember the glory years of the hot hatches? there was the Si, GTi, GTX, GLH, and of course the 86. Other than the Trueno, Toyota also gave us the Corolla FX16 GT-S. What is it? Its a 1.6-liter, twin-cam, sixteen-valve, fuel-injected four-cylinder that produces 108 horsepower at 6600 rpm, strapped to one of the smallest lightest Corolla.
