Mayday Garage Year in Review 2014: Part 3.

Happy New Years everybody!
Continuing on our Year in Review series…

Last post we talked about one of our weekly meets, Ricer Wednesday, which was a great weekly night meet to help The Rice Box, our food truck, but Coffee and Rice was kind of a coincidence. Everyone (except Khiem) at Mayday Garage LOVES coffee. If we could, we would install an espresso machine into each one of our trunks and enjoy a nice cup of coffee every damn day. Originally, the only day of the week that we could meet up was Sunday mornings, and the majority of us would make our way to one of our favorite coffee spots in Houston, Catalina. Catalina is located right outside of Downtown Houston on a strip called Washington Avenue. Washington Avenue kind of has a reputation for “douchey” bars and on any given Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, you’d understand as the bro levels are off the charts, but during the quieter mornings and afternoons, it’s relatively relaxed and peaceful. Also, the street was recently repaved which makes it super low car friendly.

As we started to drive our personal cars to Catalina, more and more people noticed the string of lowered cars on Washington Avenue and soon started joining us as we invited other groups like our friends at Proper Garage. By Summer time, the street was almost always lined with highly modified imports and we slowly started to outgrow the venue.

Cody was always a semi regular
We had all sorts of cars come out

During the second half of the year, we were given word by our good friend David Buehrer of Blacksmith/Greenway Coffee that there would be a coffee spot on the opposite side of downtown by the girls at SWEET, a very successful cupcake/bakery from the west side of Houston, and they would be serving his coffee. David distributes awesome coffee at many shops but for whatever reason, these places typically have very unfriendly driveways/parking lots for low cars. The new place, called Tout Suite (pronounced ‘Too Sweet’) is located on the corner of 2001 Commerce St. and Chartres St. on very flat paved roads! Different than Catalina because they had a full service kitchen for those important breakfast and brunch meals as well as a juice bar, and enough seating for us so the decision to switch to Tout Suite was obvious. We think this will be a great location for all of our Coffee and Rice meets for the rest of 2015!

The backdrop of Houston made for memorable shots
Cody's E36 survived the migration
Tom's S2000 in a sea of Miatas

Mayday Garage: Year in Review 2014. Part 1.

Howdy!
We do realize that we’ve been slacking on making regular blog posts for the last 6 months or so, and we have vowed to change that in 2015. We will be introducing new things, and new events that have been in the pipeline for quite some time. Over the next few days, we wanted to take the time to show everyone what we’ve been doing for all of 2014. We hope that you will enjoy the picture heavy posts coming!

To kick things off, we started the new year by bringing in some old friends from the great state of California, the mecca of automotive tuning. We’ve traveled all over the country making new friends, but it was clear that we haven’t really shown anyone our hometown, Houston, TX. We flew in Patrick Lauder of Quickworks photo who resides in the Bay Area, NorCal and our ‘Ancient Chinese Secret’ buddy, John Zhang of 1013mm who lives on the other side of Cali, Los Angeles. We invited them out to Texas to come check out TX2K14 and to also help them with earning some bank by lining up a plethora of tuned cars for them both to shoot for print.

Success! WFTX Weekend.

As we catch up on some much deserved sleep from the past weekend, we wanted to stop and say thank you to all of those involved to make WekFest TX weekend a runaway success…
We would like to take this time to recognize all the people that helped us get through WekFest TX weekend. Big thanks to all that came to the PreMeet early to help us fill in the spots before things got absolutely batshit crazy with the thousand plus cars that eventually filled the streets in the most epic meet Houston has ever seen.

Special thanks goes out to Rami and all of his Low-Weezy-Ana people including Brian, Wesley, Jonathan, Mikey and Jimmy for bringing out their show winning rides. Thanks to Jay and RC for bringing what would be the WekFest TX Best of Show Integra all the way in from Arizona. That Integra was hands down the nicest build we’ve laid eyes on, holy hell, well deserved! Thanks to Bradley Lafayette and his girlfriend Leisha for driving in the RHD all carbon J’s Racing Honda S2000, our boy Danny wishes he could have been there with you this year! Thanks to all of our special guests, Roy Moncada, Thomas Pinai, Matt Hans, Fredy Gomez, Peck, Tom Syhachack, Tito, Cody Crochett, Kevin Guevara and his team of S2000’s on CCW’s, Kevin Tran, Chan Le, Michael Austin Heath, Henry Do, Jorge and Tony from Potresse, Hajime Maki and Tiny.

Thanks to all the volunteers that did so much work at the actual meet including Kishan Panchal and his friends, Craig Kelly, Brandon Primes, Alejandro Velasquez and everyone else we forgot. That was a HUGE load off of our shoulders and we cannot thank you guys enough. Also thanks to the girls that helped work the merchandise this past weekend including Jessyca Blood, Jessica McCaffrey, Liz Reinhard and Jenny Vo. You gals are great at selling and keeping things organized behind the scenes. Thanks goes out to the guys at Moon Tower-Inn Houston for allowing such a gigantic meet to happen on the streets of Houston and for allowing us to take over the entire venue. Of course none of this is possible without the collaboration of the entire staff at Wekfest USA including Kenneth Li, Ernesto Jr Sarmiento, Geoffrey Nguyen, Wesley Katayama and the rest. You guys have made WFTX weekend a weekend for everyone in Texas and the surrounding areas to look forward to and to force people to step their game up, you have done so much for the car scene, and mad respect for you guys to come out every year. Thank you Steve Lim from Mackin Industries and Hun at ASAA racing for allowing us to share your booth space with us. We are honored that you let us join forces to showcase some of your wheels and brake products, we will HAVE to collaborate again in the future as we use only RAYS/ADVAN/Project Mu products on our own cars. And of course, thanks goes out to the team at Mayday Garage which consists of John Peterson, David Do, Danh Phan, Andrew Machac, Mikey Nguyen, Khiem Pham, John Markadakis, Fabio Pontes and Princeton Wong. Special thanks to Princeton for getting the Hakosuka out on the streets LEGALLY and for stopping everyone dead in their tracks at WekFest.

We strive to keep the Houston car scene alive and we will continue to bring the best of the best out at our shindigs. There is so much more to look forward to, and we won’t stop. Next Stop: Tokyo, Japan.
