Back in Action: Richie Ngo’s Track/Street Honda S2000.

Stance is dead.

No doubt if you and some buddies get together, it’s pretty normal to do one of a few things- talk about cars, talk about women, or talk about more cars. A very controversial subject that is now coming up while talking with booze in one hand is the state of stance. When I was talking to a colleague of mine recently, he boldly declared, “stance is dead.” Now I’m not going to be stirring any pots here by talking about what most people think HellaFlush/Stance is, but I want to clarify what exactly “Stance” means to me. In my opinion, “stance” is not about how a car looks in correlation with its tire/wheel fitment, or even how low the car sits on the pavement. It’s about “presence”, or how a car makes you feel by taking one glance at it. I often use the term presence to describe a car that I’m attracted to. We’ve all felt this presence in one way or another, Darth Vader felt this when Luke Skywalker walked onto a spaceship, I’ve felt this presence when I looked directly into the eyes of a raging bull. I have the urine stains to prove it.

When Mikey was telling me about his buddy Richie Ngo’s Honda S2000 I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical because, for one, it was in The Woodlands, and two, it was a Honda, which typically meant that it would be somewhat understated. My stereotypes were put to rest when I finally laid eyes on the beauty that you see before you. The first thought that came to mind after seeing the front of the car barely hovering over the cobblestones it was providing shade for was how the car gave off a track like presence as dictated by its stance. You didn’t have to be Darth Vader to realize that this car’s presence was from the dark side, but in a good way.

Deja Vu: Greg Lilly’s “Matte Hulk” Impreza WRX STI

Yup, that is no typo, for a third time Greg Lilly graces our page with yet another RICETASTIC build, a Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Look familiar?

That’s right, Greg’s STI has been here before, and in case you missed the feature, check it out here!

The first time we featured this Subie it was dipped in black and sat on SBC finished SSR SP3s. 19×9.5 +35 NR Disk up front and 19×9.5 +35 SL Disk in the rear with a slew of other modifications that made his STI sit pretty. Now, if you don’t know all that much about Greg, or missed his first feature then I’ll fill you in on a little fact about what he does on a daily basis. Greg owns a graphics and vinyl shop called Underground Graphics here in Houston, and as of late he has been experimenting with some new products. This time around, one of these products just happened to be some matte green 3M-vehicle wrap…

Backing up a bit, after our first shoot with Greg’s STI, he had decided that it was time to put the car up for sale and move on to a new platform. But after minimal luck selling, he started to get the itch for a change. So a few weeks ago Greg called me and told me that he was going to be giving his STI a new look and that 3M wrap was going to be the major components for the change. Now I am pretty certain that everyone that comes across our blog is familiar with, or has seen this wrap on cars before. I have to admit I was at first a bit skeptical, but when I saw the new look in person I was nothing short of impressed and I knew that a shoot was to commence.

Max Res Mondays: Holy Jeebus.

Taken by Khiem at this past All-Team Bash 4, this Fancy red Lexus LS was sitting pretty along with the other Refined Elegance folk. You can’t tell in the picture, but it was about 104 degrees outside, and when you add in the wind chill factor, it comes out to be about 112 degrees. Texas is hot, but still not hotter than the cars, so remember that. As usual, click on the photo below to get your fix for your overly enormous screens.

Oh you fancy, huh?

Lifestyle: The Mayday Life.

This post is a long time coming.

So a lot of people I meet at car events/meets/shows always say three things-
1. “Hey man, I love the photos/coverage/cars you guys put up!”
2. “Yeah, I always keep up with your blog and Facebook page!”
3. “What else do you guys do besides take photos and write posts?”

Three's company?

Work'ing hard or hardly Work'ing? Definitely the first.

Some people love shopping in malls, we prefer junkyards.

Need a lift?

If you know us personally, then you know what we’re into, and the kind of things we do, but a lot of you have been asking what exactly we do. Sure, we post random car pictures on Facebook, take photos of cars and meets/events, but like our tagline suggests- we are ricers first, bloggers second. So in an effort to show our followers what we’re into, we will be introducing another segment, The Mayday Life. The Mayday Life will be a random post about ONE day in our lives, and it could be about pretty much anything. But it’s always car related.

Event Coverage: Coffee and Cars, July Edition

It seemed like it was yesterday since we last covered Coffee and Cars last month, which means this year is going by pretty quick. Here at Mayday Garage, we are currently planning big things this year, but unfortunately, we cannot release any details at the moment so keep checking back on our site or follow us on Twitter or Facebook.

Anyone who has been to Coffee and Cars knows to be at the venue by 7:30 AM if you want a decent parking spot in the front otherwise you’ll be parking in the back, like me. I planned to leave at 6:30 A.M. but I was too busy getting my E36 cleaned up. By the time I got there it was 7:45 AM and there was absolutely no parking in the front (FML). The temperature was around 85F and climbing at a fast rate of 5 deg per hour. That doesn’t sound bad but when you are out there, it gets pretty hot! Enough with the rant about the weather, because it will be like this for another 4 months… Texas! Fck yea!

These were snaps with my cleanly, fixed Canon 5Dmk1 back from Canon.

NSX's stick together.

Corvette ZR1... I would love to test drive one of these someday.

Would this be considered a Rat Rod?

I guess she likes Martini's....

Event Coverage: The 4th Annual All Team Bash

Four years ago one man had an idea. An idea that translated into the single largest car meet that Houston now sees on a yearly basis.
Kimo, head honcho for SunWorks, a local Houston area car club that now has spanned over the nation through different chapters, brainstormed an idea that would unite Houston area car clubs for one event. Instead of competing with each other to see who had the best rides, he envisioned that clubs would get together and get to know one another, and instead compete for who had the best barbecue. The meet was christened, “All Team Bash”.

Holy Jeebus

G's up, Ho's down

You KNOW they're hot.

Event Coverage: GGP Practice Day, a Prelude to the Mexican Standoff.

Open Lots and 100 degree weather. That, is Texas Drifting.

Josh Nevrslo Steele gettin' it sideways

Josh Nevrslo Steele gettin' it sideways

Mayday Mikey Ventured out to the Dog Tracks south of Texas to go hang out with some of our local drifting buddies as veteraned drift organizer, Aaron Losey hosted yet another Texas event. Aaron, like anyone who has a passion, continues to host and promote drifting in Texas no matter how small or large the event may be. That, is Commendable. This event in particular was the prelude to the Mexican standoff which is the 2nd round of the Lonestar Drift Series. More information about this event can be found HERE

All business.

All business.

A couple of our friends were venturing all the way from Louisiana to drift on Texas soil and get their practice on, so out went Mikey to rep Mayday and say whats up to our Local Drifters and Louisiana folk. DavidD lent Mikey the ol’ D700, gave him a crash course in panning, and sent him on his way to shoot drift for his first time. And I must say, Mikey did a pretty damn good job equipped only with a 50mm 1.4 and some swift David Do training.

Kim Tran, drove all the way from Louisiana, and all the way back. This guys does not fuck around.

Event Coverage: Coffee and Cars, June Edition

We are back for more Coffee and Cars
We missed out the last two months of C&C so I had to make an effort to make it this time around.  I called up the Mayday guys to see who would be able to make it.  Only Mayday Mikey and Venn were available to join me in the early morning Texas heat.  JohnP, David, and Khiem were busy filming the 48 Hour film festival (I later joined to help out also) and Slappy (Andrew) headed out to the West Coast to cover WekFest (coverage coming Friday so check back!).

The attendance was overwhelming as usual.
